When communication with someone founders, you can sometimes understand what is happening by using the empathy spell. First, chant silently to yourself: “Me in thee, what do I see?” Then imagine yourself in the other person’s shoes, talking to you. Ask your new self these questions: “How do I feel? What do I want? Why do I want it? How can I get it? What do I fear? How do I see the other party in this conversation (your old self)? As friend? Potential ally? Obstacle? Enemy? A vague person? What am I seeing that the other party isn’t seeing?” Then return to your own skin and check your new understanding by asking some careful neutral questions, such as, “If I’m understanding correctly, this is what you want. True?” Once you understand the other party, you will quickly know whether agreement is possible and what it will take to achieve it.
